The Public Health Model, a demonstration of the problems that arise through interactions and relationships among an agent (i.e. alcohol or drugs), the host (i.e. drug user or the individual drinker) and the environment (the physical and social context of substance use) provides the guidelines by which to analyze specific risk and protective factors impacting the individual, family and the community from an environmental approach.
The following diagram illustrates the relationships between the agent, host and environment.

Did you know that prevention strategies are aimed at altering the environments in which we live? There are
two different types of environments effected by
prevention strategies (the individualized environment
and the shared environment). Observe the following:
Resource: CSAP's Centers for the Application of Prevention Technologies (CAPT, West CAPT. Environmental Prevention
Environmental strategies are just one aspect to the prevention approach and use of illegal substances,
tobacco and alcohol abuse. Environmental approaches are effective strategies in prevention efforts because they change the context (environment) in which substance abuse and use occur, they focus on policy and are aimed at influencing community standards, structures, conditions and institutions. Policy is instrumental in shaping perceptions in the home, workplace and communities; including national, state and local venues. Environmental strategies are critical because they affect large numbers of people through the adoption of policy, enforcement and systems changes. Some examples of environmental strategies would be, increasing fines for underage drinking, providing Spanish-speaking counselors, moving tobacco products behind the counter and not selling cold, single-serving containers of beer in our local convenience stores. Therefore, our prevention efforts are all about targeting both individualized and environmental strategies because a comprehensive multi-strategy effort produces population-level changes by targeting multiple factors on a large scale; ultimately, producing sufficient outcomes.
